The Chanel 2.55 Bag

When it comes to style and fashion, Coco Chanel is a name that resounds like no other. After such an eventful career in fashion, Coco retired in 1939 but her ability to affect the industry did not stop then. On the other hand, she has reignited the fashion industry at the age of 71 by launching a quilted bag in 1955. However, this quilted bag is not just any kind of quilted bag -- it became the famous Chanel 2.55 bag. What made this bag distinct from the rest is that it featured a long chain strap which wearers found convenient. Instead of hanging onto the short straps of the common purse, the long chain allowed women to have both hands free. The name Chanel 2.55 is a combination of the month and the year that the bag was launched.

History of the Chanel 2.55 Bag

When Coco was still working in the fashion industry back in the 1920s, she was very much bothered by her handbags which she had to carry in her arms. This meant that at any given period of time, she would only have limited use of her one arm because it was carrying her handbag. In her bid to have her hands freed up, she decided to take a cue from the soldiers and their bags. Coco noticed that the soldiers had bags with long straps that allowed them to don the bag without any of their arms being encumbered. So Coco decided to add thin straps to her bag and this resulted to the 1929 design. In 1954, when Coco decided take a break from retirement in 1954, she revamped her handbag for the new modern woman and the Chanel 2.55 bag was born.

Features of the Chanel Bag

Since the Chanel 2.55 is one of the classics that you'll need to have in your Chanel bag collection, you must be aware of its different features. Knowing what these features are ill also allow you to decipher if your prospective Chanel bag is an original or a rip-off. Being one of the more sought after Chanel bags, you must keep your eyes peeled for knock-offs which are being passed off as originals.

The lining. Coco drew some personal memories in making this Chanel bag and it can be seen in its lining. The Chanel 2.55 bag has a burgundy lining which is the same color as the uniforms in the convent that she lived in as a child.

Compartments. Inside the front flap, the Chanel 2.55 has a zippered compartment which is thought to be where Coco stored her love letters in the original Chanel 2.55. On the other hand, at the back of the bag is a flap where money can be stashed.

Chain Strap. One distinct part of the Chanel 2.55 is the double chain strap, which is attached to the bag with the help of a leather-threaded chain that go through eyelets. These chains look very much like the chains that the caretakers of the convent that Coco grew up in wore around their waists.

History of The Chanel 2.55 Handbag

The 2.55 handbag this name only because it was originally put out in Feb. 1955.

This bag has a lot of personal meaning to Coco Chanel:
• The lining - The lining’s brown color is the same as the color of the uniforms from the convent where she grew up.
• The inside compartment - there’s a zippered compartment at the inside of the front flap. That’s where Coco Chanel hid her love letters.
• The backside - there’s a back outside flap on the handbag – that’s where Ms Chanel kept
extra money.
• The shoulder strap- The caretakers at the convent where Coco grew up as an orphan, hold the keys at their waist dangling from the same type of chains as the 2.55 shoulder strap chains.
• The front lock – the 2.55 front lock is different from the classic double CC logo. It’s logo is called “the Mademoiselle Lock” since Coco never got married.

Chanel 255 Reissue Flap Bag – Finding The Right Chanel Bag

The Chanel 2.55 flap bag was first made in February of 1955. The creator of the bags, Coco Chanel was more interested in the quality of the bags rather than the money and the business. The result of this attitude was the best flap bags that money could buy, and her handbags sold like hot cakes in their time, and continue to sell crazy amounts up to this day in age. 50 years later, Chanel made the Chanel 255 reissue flap bag.

The Chanel 255 reissue flap bag

Chanel is known for some of the greatest handbags ever created (you should know this), but quite possible the symbol of her company is the classic Chanel quilted handbag. That handbag has just about the same impact as the golden arches of McDonalds does, you see the arches, and you know what it is. It’s the same way with the classic Chanel quilted handbag, when you see it, you know it’s Chanel. Other purse and handbag companies tremble in fear when they are in the presence of the classic Chanel.

Celebrate 50 Years of Chanel

The reissue of the Chanel 2.55 flap bag came about in 2005 to celebrate 50 years of business with Chanel. It currently has broken all sales records within the history of the Chanel Company.

Many people are searching to get their hands on one of these diamonds in the rough, and you will have to be willing to let go of a pretty penny in order to get your hands on one, but you should be willing to do this. If you are an avid user of Chanel handbags, then it should be important that you get your hands on a Chanel 2.55 reissue.

Authentic Chanel Reissue 2.55 Flap Bags

When it comes to the Chanel 255 Reissue flap bag, one will need to search far and wide in order to get one. There are plenty of fake ones out there that you could settle for, but I discourage this. Why would you want to get a fake version of the most popular handbag in history? I sure wouldn’t, in fact, I would be searching everywhere to find the real deal. You will have to be willing to make a small investment for one of these hot rods, but take it from me, you would look good in any Chanel handbag, but you will look amazing in the 2.55 reissue. You may just want to get this item as a collectable, and that is fine too. Either way, a Chanel 2.55 Reissue would be a smart move to make in the choice of your next Chanel handbag.
